Half-Way Covenant is signed.
June 14, 1657
The agreement results from a General Synod of the Churches in Boston. It expands church membership by declaring that all those baptized in infancy may be admitted as church members and entitled to all privileges, with the exception of “the Lord’s Supper,” even if they have not made a formal profession of faith. The decision is reaffirmed at another synod in 1662, when it extends church membership to those who had a conversion experience but appear to lead moral lives.
